Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers an area of 331 square kilometers and is haven to almost half the Earth’s overall mountain gorilla population.

This Park has about 20 habituated gorilla groups, making it the highest of the four Parks sheltering the Great Apes.

Bwindi is the only gorilla trekking destination divided into sectors/regions and it is also the only place where visitors can visit semi-habituated gorilla groups during the “Gorilla Habituation Experience” where you can spend up to four hours watching them.Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second gorilla trekking destination in Uganda and offers only one habituated gorilla group – Nyakagezi. Including Nyakagezi family, Uganda has a total of 25 habituated gorilla families. These two national parks are found in south-western part of the country, about 8-9 hours’ drive from Kampala. They can be accessed by air – nearby airstrips being Kihiihi and Kisoro Airstrips then connect to the Parks by road.

This Park extends for 160 square kilometers (almost half the size of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park) and is haven to 12 habituated gorilla groups (as of 2020).

Of the four Gorilla Trekking destinations, Volcanoes is the easiest-to-reach because it is only 3 hours’ drive from Kigali Airport / Capital City.
