Did you know that the Murchison Falls is part of river Nile the longest river in the world?
Murchison Falls formally known as Kabalega Falls is situated in Murchison Falls National Park north northwestern part of Uganda the pearl of Africa. These falls are known to be the most powerful waterfalls in the world. On this point, the water squeezes itself into a narrow gorge forming a rainbow.
The surrounding national park is Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area covering an area of 3,893 square kilometers homing large numbers of wild animals and over 450 bird species including the rare shoebill stork.
While in the park there is a lot to do and these are.
Game drives
Game drives are a must-do activity done in the northern part of the park. The game drive rewards you with a chance to spot animals like giraffes, elephants, buffalos, lions, hippos, leopards, warthogs, hartebeests, giraffes, and many more. The game drives normally take you to the hippo’s pool for breaks to enjoy bush breakfasts, fruits, and more.
Boat tours
Boat tours are done on the Nile River to the bottom of the falls must not be missed on your safari to visit Murchison Falls. This is the second experience after a game drive. There is a lot to enjoy such as elephants, antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, and different birds like renowned water birds like the African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, Shoebill stork, hamerkop, and more. There are two shifts and the morning and afternoon shifts both are rewarding.
Birding
As earlier mentioned the park is home to over 450 bird species, birding can be done while on foot, boat cruise, or even on game drives. During this time, expect to meet birds like the rare Shoebill stork, Giant Kingfisher, Giant Heron, Shoebill stork, Abyssinian Ground hornbill, and many more. Birding is advised to be conducted from March to May and September to November when flowering and fruiting are taking place.
Sport fishing
Enjoying fishing catfish and Nile Perch on the visit to Murchison Falls. This is done on a fee paid to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This activity is done at the bottom of Murchison Falls and this calls for great photos. This activity is done under the guidance of the park ranger and local guide knowledgeable about the best fishing area.
Hiking to the top of the falls
The boat cruise leaves you at the bottom of the falls and then a hike through a forested area will begin at the top of the falls. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the falls and the surroundings. Reaching the top of the falls rewards you with a great view of the rainbow which is formed when water squeezes itself in a narrow gorge. Additionally, have a view of a point where Uhuru Falls joins Albert Nile.
Chimpanzee tracking
Chimpanzee tracking in the Budongo forest is done in two shifts and that is the morning and afternoon. This experience introduces trekkers to the presence of these beautiful human close relatives the chimpanzees for an hour. The overall experience takes about 5 hours in the jungle while spotting other attractions like primates, birds, plants, and more. Budongo forest is near Murchison Falls National Park and it’s among forest reserves in Uganda.
