The adventure emphasizes that visitors are face-to-face with mountain gorillas.
Leave alone a zoo experience where the primates are behind a wire mesh or glass. No, this is far beyond that. Gorilla trekking means visitors are locked into the jungles of the gorilla habitat. This is after traversing the undergrowth until coming close to the gorillas.

The gorilla trekking experience in Uganda
Gorilla trekking sends visitors into the gorilla habitat for an hour with the mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are an endangered primate species that live in mountainous or highland regions. In the whole world, mountain gorillas are situated in the Virunga Conservation Area that stretches from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Virunga National Park through Uganda into Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
These mountain gorillas are very social and live in groups known as gorilla families. At the apex of these groups is the male-dominant gorilla in charge of the families. This dominant gorilla is called a silverback.
Gorilla trekking experience in Uganda kicks off with a pre-trekking briefing that highlights the guidelines and details the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. This briefing categorizes visitors into equal groups of 8 people. This is because each gorilla family is explored by 8 visitors daily.
The pre-trekking briefing begins as early as 7:30 – 8 am to allow visitors to have an insight into the gorilla trekking experience before they venture through the forest. This briefing is conducted by the rangers, who highlight the specifics of this gorilla trekking experience. The trekking experience in Uganda has both challenging and relatively manageable terrain.
Purchasing a gorilla permit
A gorilla permit is a document that allows visitors to access the mountain gorillas in their natural environment. Visitors can only purchase the gorilla permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority through a local tour operator like Monteero Safaris. Gorilla permits are very competitive; visitors must purchase the permit at least 3 months before the desired trekking dates.
A limited number of 8 people per gorilla family are authorized to trek with a gorilla family per day. Therefore, this means permits can be limited, although there are many. This is very common in the peak dry seasons when there high turnout of visitors.
Cost of gorilla trekking in Uganda
The cost of a gorilla trekking experience in Uganda is categorized under International visitors who pay USD 800, foreign residents USD 700, and UGX 300,000 for East Africans and nationals. These costs for the gorilla permit in Uganda are valid until the end of this year, 2026. The Uganda Wildlife Authority released the new costs for gorilla permits effective next year 1st January 2027.
Gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda
There is no place like home, they say, until one visits Uganda. You see, this gifted country emphasizes the diversity of wildlife species, and mountain gorillas are among these species. What other countries lack, Uganda has plenty of it, and this is why this country is among the best adventurous destinations in the world. Mountain gorillas are among the highly sought-after primates in the world, and Uganda happens to have two gorilla trekking destinations, as shown below;
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is ultimately the best gorilla destination in the world. This is evident enough when it was listed as the third-best adventure destination in 2025 under the Tourist Awards held in Saudi Arabia, the best in the gorilla destinations. Bwindi is situated in the southwestern region of Uganda, covering over 331 square kilometers. It harbours over 460 mountain gorillas with about 50 gorilla families. These are scattered in the four gorilla sectors of Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Rushaga. Bwindi was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, this is 3 years after it was established as a national park.
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second gorilla destination in Uganda. It dominates the southwestern region, a few kilometers from Bwindi, close to the border with Rwanda. Over 100 mountain gorillas venture through the ecological systems of this park. The Nyakagezi gorilla family is the only habituated gorilla family in this park. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established in 1991 and became Uganda’s smallest protected area, stretching for over 33.7 square kilometers.
Obtaining a tourist visa in Uganda for gorilla trekking
The first step after confirming that visitors are set for the gorilla trekking experience is to obtain a tourist visa. Obtaining a tourist visa in Uganda can only be done online by applying through the official Immigration website of Uganda. The best thing about this online process is seamless and saves you the trouble of looking for a Ugandan embassy to physically apply.
Uganda is part of the East African Community, meaning a tourist visa in Uganda can be used across all the countries that are part of the community. You cannot enter Uganda for gorilla trekking unless you obtain a tourist visa.
