Visit to Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru Caves

Introduction

Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru caves are historical caves that are located 10 kilometers away from Fort Portal city in the western region of Uganda in the Toro Kingdom. The caves have a legendary history of Bachwezi attached to them. When you visit these caves, there is a local guide who is well knowledgeable about the history of the place. The caves are located on the foothills of mountain Rwenzori and this gives you a beautiful scenery of Rwenzori mountains while you are at the caves on Bundibugyo Road.

This is the place where the Chwezi leader Bukkukku lived with his daughter Mwiru.  The name Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru was derived from the breasts of Nyinamwiru who was King Bukkukku’s wife. Bukkukku cut off the breasts of his wife so he wouldn’t look attractive to other men. He went and hung the breasts in the caves which kept dripping milky substance that was believed to be the breast milk of Nyinamwiru. However, scientifically they are stalactites and stalagmites. King Bukkukku’s agenda later did not succeed and Nyinamwiru conceived and gave birth to Ndahura a son of King Isaza of Batembuzi.  Ndahura made a prophecy that he would overthrow Bukkukku who had overthrown Isaza his father. This prophecy came to pass as Ndahura killed King Bukkukku and formed one of the strongest empires in the Great Lakes.
