Museum of Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey Museum tour

The Dian Fossey Museum is situated in the northwest of Rwanda, specifically in Musanze district. The museum is near the renowned Volcanoes National Park, thus offering gorilla trekking tours to complement your visit. The museum was established to honor Dian Fossey herself. She was an academic who contributed significantly to the conservation of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Conservation Area. The tragic end to her life in late 1985 left a sad but powerful impact on the area.

Roles of the Dian Fossey Museum

Since its establishment, the Dian Fossey Museum has been raising awareness about promoting mountain gorilla conservation to visitors. Nevertheless, this approach has been expanded throughout Rwanda and beyond. The activities even incorporate conservation of not only mountain gorillas but also other wildlife species. The Dian Fossey Museum achieves this through education, outreach, and direct support of fieldwork initiatives, among others.

Raising awareness in Rwanda is done through collaborations with local schools and various youth groups. The Dian Fossey Museum facilitates teaching the younger generation in ways that should be fun but informative. This is a good way to ensure that knowledge on gorilla conservation is made available for generations.

As visitors and the wider public learn, they enhance their knowledge on reducing threats to the survival of mountain gorillas. These threats include habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts, and poaching, etc. Lessons learnt from the Dian Fossey Museum include promoting afforestation, avoiding encroachment into forests, and choosing ecotourism while exploring gorilla destinations.

However, the Dian Fossey Museum addresses some of the root causes of human-wildlife conflicts, such as poverty in the adjacent communities. They do this through offering alternative sources of livelihoods, such as making crafts and managing eco-friendly accommodations. The museum also offers employment opportunities to qualified people from within the communities adjacent to the forest. They are employed as staff, guides, and facilitators, etc.
