Silverback gorillas in Rwanda

In this park, there are over 10 habituated gorilla families. These include the Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agahya, Kwitonda, Umubano, Hirwa, Susa, Karisimbi, Bwenge, and Titus gorilla families. The names of the family are normally determined by the name of the Silverback inch age of that family he heads. For example, the Kwitonda gorilla family is headed by Kwitonda the silverback.

Silverbacks play a big role in the gorilla family such as mating all female members in the group, defending the group through fighting intruders, leading members to the best location for food, grooming young ones, and more. While in Volcanoes National Park, you can encounter the silverbacks through a gorilla trekking experience. Gorilla trekking takes place only in the morning and only 8 trekkers trek a single gorilla family per day. Trekkers are allowed to spend an hour in the presence of a gorilla family trekking watching and learning about the roles of a silverback while capturing great moments. Remember that the trek can last anywhere from 2-5 hours since no one can determine the location of the gorillas. However, the experience involves trekking through lush bamboo forests, thick vegetation, and rugged terrain.

Any tourist interested in visiting the gorillas needs to possess a gorilla trekking permit which is a document allowing a visitor to trek a gorilla family once. The gorilla trekking permits can only be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board through a recognized, registered, and licensed tour operator like Monteero Safaris. We advise you to book with us for a gorilla permit in advance at least 2 months before the trekking date. Each gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents, USD 500 for foreign residents, and USD 200 for East African citizens. This implies only per person and permit.

Prepare physically since the hike seems to be strenuous as you walk long distances through steep terrain since the gorillas live in the mountains. This means that you need to prepare early through regular walks and hikes. Dress appropriately such as long-sleeved shirts and trousers with dull color’s that reflect the environment. This helps you from the thorny vegetation. Pack a raincoat since the weather is unpredictable.

Hire a local porter to help you in carrying your luggage in case you have extra luggage. Respect the rules and regulations of trekking such as keeping an 8-meter distance from the gorillas, observing silence, and following the guidelines given by your park ranger guide.
