Although chimpanzees are habituated and are not bothered by the presence of humans, they can sometimes act aggressively if threatened. Some rules, like no flash photos, maintain a distance of over 7-10 meters, among others, help to protect both the visitors and the primates. Ranger guides
As visitors embark on a chimpanzee trekking experience, they are assigned rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to help them locate these primates. Favourable trekking gear is very vital for the safety of visitors, for example, long-sleeved shirts help to protect the visitors from the insects and thorny vegetation. The jungle boots help visitors navigate through the muddy and slippery terrain, thus keeping them safe.
When to see chimpanzees in Uganda?
Chimpanzees in Uganda can be spotted and encountered at any time of the year, since the chimpanzee destinations are always open. The question of when to see them basically means the best time to have a chimpanzee trekking experience. As this experience can be done any time of the year, the best time is always the dry season.
Uganda’s southwestern region is crossed by the equator, thus influencing the climate to a tropical or equatorial type of climate. Most of the chimpanzee destinations along the southwestern stretch cross the equator. This means that this area receives two dry and wet seasons every year.
The dry season, which is the peak season that sees an increase in the number of visitors, since it is the best chimpanzee trekking season. This is because during this season, there are limited rainfall patterns and high temperatures due to the prolonged sun.
This ensures that the chimpanzee destinations remain clear with sparse vegetation and dry trails. Such conditions favor navigation during the chimpanzee trekking. The sparse vegetation increases visibility of the primates. From June to September and from December to February, the dry season is in effect.
The wet season, on the other hand, is also ideal for seeing chimpanzees in Uganda. The climate of this country is very unpredictable and sometimes serves to be favorable for chimpanzee trekking even in the wet season.
The wet season is a period of prolonged rains and cool temperatures that make the trails muddy and slippery. However, this does not mean that the chimpanzees cannot be spotted. Visitors in it for a challenging trekking experience, this season serves them best. The wet season runs from March to May and from October to November.
