The population of Mountain gorillas currently stands at 1063 individuals in the wild. Almost half of these great Apes live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while the remaining ones are in the Virunga Conservation Area (comprising of Virunga National Park in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Volcanoes National Park in north-western Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south-western Uganda). These creatures occupy the thick forests, high in the mountains with altitudes between 2200 and 4500 meters above sea level.

Gorilla Trekking Tours in Uganda are conducted within Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, both in south-western side of the country. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers an area of 331 square kilometers and is haven to almost half the Earth’s overall mountain gorilla population.

This Park has about 20 habituated gorilla groups, making it the highest of the four Parks sheltering the Great Apes. Bwindi is the only gorilla trekking destination divided into sectors/regions and it is also the only place where visitors can visit semi-habituated gorilla groups during the “Gorilla Habituation Experience” where you can spend up to four hours watching them.
