Hiking Mount. Rwenzori

Rwenzori is on the border of Uganda and DR Congo but can easily be hiked on the side of Uganda to the highest peak Margherita standing at 5109 meters. The top summits are found above the clouds thus Rwenzori was named the mountains of the moon. This mountain stands as one of Africa’s most iconic mountain ranges. Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains to the summit of the whole circuit can take about 7 days and this of to be physically fit with trekking.

The Rwenzori Mountains are comprised of different mountains such as Mount. Speke, Mount. Baker, Mount. Emin, and Mount. Gessi. Trekking routes

There are several routes used while hiking Mount Rwenzori and these range from short to long hikes. The most popular hikes include;

Central circuit trail

The central circuit trail which is the most famous route to the summit takes about 7-10 days to complete the experience. This is through the Bakonzo homesteads at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, forested areas with their primates and birdlife, alpine and heather areas with their unique plants such as giant lobelias, through crater lakes like Mahoma, and ends to the Margherita peak with its snow.

Kilembe trail

The Kilembe trail begins from Kilembe town offering a different perspective of the mountain and connects to the central circuit trail at a higher elevation. Visitors using this trail are advised to visit the Kilembe mines to get a picture of how copper and cobalt are mined.

Bukurungu trail

The Bukurungu trail and Karanga Trail are new trails on these mountains and these give a spectacular scenery of the surroundings. Have a chance to meet primates including chimpanzees the human close relatives. Most of the birders enjoy these trails since there is a lot to spot such as Rwenzori Turaco, sunbirds, weavers, and more.

Preparing for a hike

Permits and guides should be considered first since they allow you to access the park. These permits can be obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority head offices in Kampala through a recognized, registered, and licensed tour operator. Hiring a local guide is so important since he’s knowledgeable about the area’s natural and cultural history.

Fitness level, since the hike is challenging, this calls for one to be physically fit. Prepare in advance to enjoy the beautiful gem in the wild as you pass through different terrains covered with muddy areas, and rocky paths while walking for long hours.

When to take a hike to Rwenzori Mountain

Any time of the year, the mountain can be hiked but we advised our clients to take a hike during the dry season that occurs in December to February and June to August. This provides favorable weather conditions for hiking. This gives clear blue skies, passable paths, and more. During wet seasons, which happen from March to May and September to November, the trails become muddy and impassable.
