Climbing Mountain Rwenzori

Introduction

Mountain Rwenzori is a range of Mountains in Eastern equatorial Africa located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is situated within Mountain Rwenzori National Park in the southwestern region of the country and also in the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its highest peak stands at 5,109 meters above sea level known as the Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley. This is Africa’s third-highest peak after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. The Margherita Peak was named after Queen Margherita of Italy whereas Mount Stanley was named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley an explorer and a British journalist who discovered it back in the colonial exploration period of the 1880s. 

Other peaks or ranges include Mount Speke which is the second highest among the peaks with an elevation of 4,890 meters above sea level. Mount Baker another range on Rwenzori is situated close to Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is locally known as Mountain Kiyanja by the Bakonjo people who live around the Rwenzori ranges. Mount Baker stands at a height of 4,844 meters making it the sixth highest Mountain on the African continent. Mount Baker together with Mount Stanley form a triangle enclosing the upper Bujuku Valley. Mount Gessi is among the six mountains that form the Rwenzori ranges. It is positioned in the north of the Bujuku valley standing at an elevation of 4,578 meters. Mount Luigi Di Savora is another mountain that makes up the Rwenzori ranges standing at a height of 4,537 meters above sea level a few meters away from Margherita. 

These mountains are occasionally identified with the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” described in antiquity as the true source of the Nile River. The Rwenzori mount ranges are known for their vegetation cover that ranges from tropical rainforests through the alpine meadows to snow. The Rwenzori Mountains are covered by five overlapping vegetation zones namely the ever-green forest zone, the bamboo zone, the heather zone, the alpine zone, and the naval zone. The Rwenzori Mountains offer two types of hiking experiences to hikers that is, high-altitude and low-altitude experiences. The low-altitude hikes don’t go beyond 4,000 meters and typically last 2-4 days whereas high-altitude hikes go beyond 4,000 meters and last 4-12 days. 

Climbing routes

The Rwenzori Mountains offer a variety of hiking routes to suit different hiking experience levels and time constraints. Each climbing route showcases different and unique scenic landscapes and climbing experiences ranging from steep and rugged terrains to gentle slopes and lush valleys. These include the following.

The Central Circuit

This is the mountain’s most popular climbing trail that takes one through the jungle of the mountain traversing the magnificent Bujuku valley. This route also ascends past Weismann’s Peak to conquer the highest peak of the mountain ranges, the Margherita Peak. Conquering the Margherita Peak via this trail lasts for about 7-9 days.

Kilembe trail

This is a shorter and less strenuous hiking trail that lasts a few days offering scenic sightings of glaciers and alpine lakes. This trail is also best for hikers who prefer a moderate challenge and fantastic for those with limited time.

There are other more challenging trails, for example, high altitude trails including those that involve summiting multiple peaks and those that specifically target the popular Margherita peak. These trails are best suitable for experienced hikers lasting for about 7-12 days.

Essential equipment and gears

For one to have a safe, comfortable, and successful mountain climbing experience in the Rwenzori Mountains, one should consider packing essential gear and equipment. This is because of the region’s unforeseen weather conditions and challenging climbing trails. These include the following.

  • Comfortable hiking shoes. These hiking shoes should be waterproof and able to support the ankle as well as protect one’s feet from the sharp stones within the hiking rugged terrain.
  • Light and warm clothing. This may also be termed layered clothes that easily adapt to varying temperatures and weather conditions. These must have a waterproof outer shell to protect one from rain as well as coldness since these mountain ranges get very cold even in the summer.

To hike the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, one has to obtain a hiking permit through an entrusted tour operator like Monteero Safaris. The entrance fee to Mountain Rwenzori National Park is USD 35 for foreign non-residents, USD 25 for foreign residents, and UGX 15,000 for East African citizens per day and person. The Rwenzori Mountain hike costs USD 50 for foreign non-residents, USD 40 for foreign residents, and UGX 50,000 for East African citizens per person all exclusive of accommodation and meal costs. Best time for climbing mountain Rwenzori

Climbing Mountain Rwenzori can be hiked all year round the best time is during the two dry seasons of the year. The dry seasons occur from June to early September and December to February. These periods of the year offer favorable hiking and climbing conditions with minimal chances of rainfall downpours. During this period of the year, the views of the stunning landscapes are clearer with comfortable temperatures compared to the rainy season.
