The new gorilla habituation costs in Uganda 2027

Starting in 2027, Uganda will usher in new gorilla habituation costs. The new gorilla habituation costs in Uganda 2027 are classified in categories of nationality. Available options include international visitors, foreign residents working in the country, the rest of Africa, and East African citizens, including Ugandans. These new gorilla habituation costs for kick-off by January 2027 are as follows.

Foreign non-residents – USD 1,800

Foreign residents – USD 1,600

Rest of Africa – USD 1,000

East African Citizens – UGX 750,000

The mention of the new gorilla habituation costs indicates there are existing, ongoing habituation costs through January 2027. The new costs of gorilla habituation have been slightly increased. Other than the East African citizens and the rest of Africa, the prices of a gorilla habituation permit for foreign non-residents and foreign residents increased from USD 1,500and USD 1,000,respectively.

What are the reasons for this increment?

An increment in the costs of gorilla habituation permits is expected to take effect from January 2027. This increment is attributed to several reasons, some of which are shown below.

Increase conservation efforts

Gorilla habituation requires extensive conservation efforts because these mountain gorillas are still endangered. Therefore, the need to strengthen and increase the conservation and protection efforts of the mountain gorillas pushed the costs further. There are many costs involved in protecting the existence of the mountain gorillas in their natural homeland.

Therefore, with the recent increment in the costs of gorilla habituation taking effect in January 2027, the conservation efforts are estimated to be elevated even further. Conservation is the backbone of gorilla habituation heritage and the main reason why we still have gorillas today. Therefore, conservation is no question but is a must-do since the threats that threaten the existence of the mountain gorillas are still imminent.

Need to increase habituated gorilla families

The rising number of visitors to Uganda for gorilla trekking has also led to the costs of the gorilla habituation to increase. There is an increasing demand for gorilla trekking as visitors’ numbers continue to rise. Therefore, this presents the need to increase the habituated gorilla families. A gorilla family is trekked by 8 people per day to protect the primates from being stressed due to many numbers.

With the increase in the number of visitors, the habituated gorilla families have become less numerous due to the numbers since reducing availability of gorilla trekking permits. This presents a much-needed habituation plan to increase the habituated gorilla families for trekking. Hence, this raises the costs for gorilla habituation.

High costs for conservation

It is no brainer that conservation is very much needed. However, the conservation efforts have doubled in the recent past. This has strained the Uganda Wildlife Authority conservation budget to keep up with the ever-changing and challenging threats to the mountain gorillas. Even the materials used in some of the conservation efforts have increased in price. Faced with such conditions, it was only a matter of time before the gorilla habituation costs increased.

Develop infrastructure

The need to develop infrastructure to replace the old and overdue infrastructure is also another reason for the gorilla habituation price increment. Starting with the road infrastructure, recently accessible roads to the sector where habitation is carried out are in a sorry state and need much attention and improvement.

When it rains, it can be close to impossible to navigate these roads. Therefore, the government has increased the gorilla habituation prices to get funds for such infrastructure. The parking space is also very small same goes for the briefing centers. All these require infrastructure for better service and monitoring through quick response and navigation.

Briefly about gorilla habituation in Uganda

Yes, the cost for gorilla habituation could be increasing, but do you know what gorilla habituation is all about? Gorilla habituation a method of training wild mountain gorillas to be accustomed to human beings. Wild mountain gorillas are wild animals with little encounter and knowledge about humans, and can see them as intruders or a threat.

Therefore, gorilla habituation helps to prepare these primates to be familiar with humans and not see them as a threat. Just like humans who cannot trust someone after meeting them for the first time, mountain gorillas also see humans as intruders. However, after a series of habituation processes, this trust between the mountain gorillas and the humans is built. And this leads to daily gorilla trekking.

The estimated time to habituate a single gorilla family or group depends on the nature of the individuals. Gorilla families with friendly individuals, the habituation process takes less time than the more conscious groups. The whole gorilla habituation process takes approximately 2-3 years.

Each gorilla habituation exercise lasts for 4 hours straight. Only 4 visitors are allowed to have a gorilla habituation experience per day. These are always in accompany of rangers and researchers who monitor and record the mountain gorilla behaviours.

Where is gorilla habituation done?

Gorilla habituation is only done in the Rushaga gorilla sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This sector is located in the southern region of the park. The scenic views of this sector light up your adventure spirit as you venture into a habituation process. Rushaga gorilla sector has one of the largest gorilla families in the park.

It prides in having a large number of unhabituated gorilla groups. This presents the Rushaga gorilla sector as the only candidate for gorilla habituation.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the most visited gorilla destination in the world. From 1991, when it was established as a national park from a crown forest reserve after the discovery of mountain gorillas, Bwindi has been leading the charts as the best and only park for gorilla habituation in all the Virunga gorilla destinations.

This is among many reasons that 3 years after Bwindi’s establishment as a modest gorilla destination, it was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Bwindi stretches for over 331 square kilometers through the districts of Kunungu, Kabale, and Kisoro.

Apart from the mentioned Rushaga, Bwindi has three other gorilla sectors, namely, Buhoma, Nkuringo, and Ruhija. All these sectors offer an amazing range of gorilla trekking experiences. Approximately 24 habituated gorilla families are in Bwindi and ready for gorilla trekking. There are part of the 449 mountain gorillas in the park.
