In the tale of the primate world, no one could have seen this coming, a chimpanzee civil war. Many questions arose, sending scientists and researchers into a deep state of research and study in search of answers. The 21st century was gifted with a once in a life time event that echoed through the pristine jungles of the primate capital. Witnessed once in 500 years, a chimpanzee civil war was almost unheard of in the current world.
This was not later than 2025, when a group of male chimpanzees from a certain group mobilized each other and lashed out at unsuspecting victims of the other faction. Although the scientists had a sense of the usual behaviour of these chimpanzees, no one could have predicted the worst. In a humanist turn of events, chimpanzees’ likeness to humans makes even the unique events like politics similar.
As the researchers and scientists zero in on the most viable reason for this unusual chimpanzee civil war, one thing remains clear: the hunger for power. Humans before civilization lived in harmony and unity, but as years passed, the hunger for power and dominancy forced many into war. This is not short of the description of the chimpanzee civil war that recently unfolded on a global scale.
The Ngogo chimpanzee community was an undisputed territory of over 200 chimpanzee individuals. This means there was no other chimpanzee community bigger than the Ngogo. From its formation and first study by the scientists and researchers, this community, regardless of its size, stood on strong lines of unity, harmony, and togetherness. This is why, for many years, it was the center of research, and many studies revolved around it.
The friendship and relationship the Ngogo chimpanzees once shared was very passionate and intimate. This is because it went further from sharing food, territory, hunting techniques, to even sharing females. This was one for the brotherhood.
Just like a volcano begins with fault lines, before the violent eruption occurs, the chimpanzee civil war began with increasing disputes. Such disputes were amicably resolved before, but later these disputes increased with no viable solutions. Then, disappearances and deaths of members started to occur, and all this went on for a while.
By 2015, what scientists had feared unfolded right before their eyes? The famous largest chimpanzee community in the world, the Ngogo, split into two factions. This split is very much attributed to the long-standing factors, especially the dominance and size of the group. At this split, the Ngogo chimpanzee community formed two factions: the Western and Central.
What is not certain are the reasons for this split. Because who do you explain that a brotherhood so strong that they shared everything, now they are sworn enemies and after each other’s blood. However, from 2014, when deaths increased in this community, claiming elders and dominant males, left gaps in leadership. From this split, coordinated attacks have been further recorded.
The recent incident is the one in 2025 when chimpanzees from the western faction moved swiftly in an attack formation to attack on the central front. From 2018 until the last attack in 2025, the western faction chimpanzees have killed over 7 adult chimps and 17 infants. They further cannibalize the young male victim as a sign of lethalness and power.
Where did the chimpanzee civil war happen?
The chimpanzee civil war was recorded in the primate capital of the world, Kibale National Park. Over 2,000 chimpanzee primates reside in this park, and the largest recorded chimpanzee community, the Ngogo, was here. Kibale National Park is not short of adventure, but wonders, wow, no one saw that coming. This national park has long been known as a chimpanzee habitat and the best chimp destination in the world.
For Kibale National Park to pull off an unbelievable act like the chimpanzee civil war, then we sure have not exhausted its full potential. Although this civil war has just been reported, it has been occurring in a series of attacks. Kibale National Park, standing at 795 square kilometers, is the best chimpanzee destination in the world. Its vast ecological systems bearing plenty of food for the chimpanzees and its territory are a highlight to discover these primates.
Tucked away in the western region of the pearl of Africa, Uganda, Kibale populates this territory with various primates. Over 13 primate species are recorded here, but the chimpanzees are the kingmakers.
However, it is also best to understand that the chimpanzee civil war, though it took place in Uganda, specifically Kibale, was once recorded in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park. In the 1970s, during her time in Gombe Stream National Park, Jane Goodall witnessed a similar war among the chimpanzees that lasted for over four years. By then, nothing similar had been recorded or sighted, which didn’t hold much water with the scientists. Years later, a similar civil war in Kibale raised eyebrows on the likeliness to that of the 1970s.
